Austria

Austria is a very popular destination during any season, but especially so during winter and ski season.  Depending on conditions, Austria is one place where it is possible to ski year-round – even during summer – on its many glaciers.  It is also a place where avid skiers will be in good company as skiing is a passion and way of life for most Austrians.

Vienna (Wien), the capital of Austria, is situated in the north of the country while the country’s highest mountain peak, the Grossglockner, lies to the south.  Austria is a landlocked country, bordered by the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia and Switzerland.  What it lacks in coastline, however, it more than makes up for in lakes and magical winter-wonderland mountain scenery.  The currency is the Euro and German is the spoken language, although English is widely spoken everywhere.

Think of Austria and many delightful images come to mind other than the spectacular snow-covered Alpine mountains and lakes: Fairytale castles, Lipizzaner stallions, apfelstrudel, Swarovski crystals, oompah bands, polkas, waltzes, and yodelling.  Many famous people, and composers, (far to many to mention here) have called Austria home: Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud… Arnold Schwarzenegger…

Choosing Austria as your skiing or boarding destination opens up a mind-boggling choice and variety. There are dozens of superb areas and resorts in the different mountain ranges, such as Innsbruck – the capital of the Tyrol, St. Anton, Sölden, Lech, Zürs, Mayrhofen, Saalbach, Lech, Zell am See, and Kitzbuhel - to name just a few.  The choice for après ski and night life can be anything you want it to be, from sophisticated dining and clubs and modern bars, to kicking your heels up to traditional polka music complete with accordion, lederhosen and yodelling.

The ski resorts of Austria are easily reached by air, road or train.  Historic Innsbruck and Salzburg are popular destination cities and within reach of many of the most popular resorts and glacier skiing.  Excellent snowboarding parks and terrain, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, and every other form of fun winter activity can be found all over the Austria.
