Cortina hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1956 and World Cup downhill ski races are held annually during January. The skiing at Cortina is great for beginners and intermediates with plenty of long cruising runs. If the local skiing at Cortina is not challenging enough for experts, they can take advantage of the Super Ski Pass, which offers more terrain than you can shake a stick at with 700+ miles of runs encompassing 12 resorts. The lifts are generally fast and efficient, and there are cable cars and free ski buses to transport skiers between the different areas included in the Super Ski Pass. The Cortina Area Pass includes Cortina, Misurina and Auronzo and San Vito. Cortina is great for snowboarders with all terrain available, as well as a park with half pipe. A favourite activity for daredevils is riding the Olympic bobsled run. There are also miles of trails for cross-country skiing. For those who like to make tracks in serious powder, heli-skiing is legal in Italy and available in some areas. For a change of pace, or for non-skiers, Cortina has a range of activities including ice-skating, snowmobiling, tobogganing, ice-climbing, dog sleds, sledging and snowshoeing – as well as great shopping. There are also museums, cinemas, galleries, great restaurants, pubs and bars. Why do anything? Just relax and enjoy the ambience and scenery and do some serious people-watching, or take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh. Also, beautiful Venice is only a couple of hours away. Cortina is not lacking in choices for lively après ski and nightlife with a wide choice of restaurants to indulge in wonderful Italian cuisine, as well as bars, discos, piano bars and wine bars.
