Megève
The Piste at Megève

Megève is a picturesque old town filled with traditional snow-covered chalets.  It brims over with French charm with its medieval town square, cobble-stone streets and horse-drawn sleighs.  The town centre is a pedestrian-only treat.  In the 1960s it was known as one of the favoured destinations of film stars and jet-setters from all corners of the world.

Different levels of ski pass allow a choice of skiing the pistes of Megève only, or also skiing nearby resorts and Chamonix. For snowboarders it offers two parks and a half-pipe.  Megève is at the centre of the ‘Evasion’ ski area, which includes St Gervais, Jaillet & Combloux (the ski areas of Rochebrune, Mont d’Arbois, Cote 2000, and Jaillet).  Cote 2000 is better suited to advanced skiers, but the rest is considred suitable for all levels and it is good for tree-skiing.  The resort sits at 1100m and snowfall can be patchy during bad snow years but they have snowmaking canons to keep the pistes topped up.

Shopping is not inexpensive, but the chic designer boutiques and shops are a dream for those who can afford to shop ‘til they drop.  Although Megève is perceived to be rather upmarket, it is possible to find accommodation, restaurants and entertainment to suit most budgets.

There are plenty of other activities in the area, such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, curling, ice skating and bowling.  There is also a sports centre and several cinemas.  Non-skiers can ride the cable car to meet skiers for lunch and a toddy at a mountain restaurant and take in the spectacular mountain views.

The apres ski and nightlife scene in Megève has plenty to offer. There are nightclubs, bars, cafes, discos and restaurants – many of which stay open very late or through the night. Don’t forget the Casino and Jazz Club. You don’t have to be mega-rich to enjoy the night scene as there are less ritzy places to unbuckle the ski boots and kick up your heels.
