Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt offers fantastic skiing in the Swiss Alps, made extra-special by its setting against the dramatic backdrop of the towering Matterhorn.  Many believe Zermatt is the best ski resort in the world - and that may well be true - but it is, of course, a matter of opinion.  The town has a peaceful Alpine charm, due in part to the lack of cars in its pedestrian-only town, cobbled streets and horse-drawn sleighs.  Although German is spoken, most locals speak English.

Zermatt boasts the tallest mountains in Europe (other than Mont Blanc).  The cable cars, also known as aerial tramways, are not for acrophobia/vertigo sufferers!  They offer spectacular views of the scenery below as they glide often thousands of feet above the dazzling winter wonderland.

Zermatt offers some of the highest and longest ski runs in the world - whether you prefer easy cruising runs, steep and scary, or the occasional mogul mine- field. There are plenty of easy runs for beginners but the big, beefy, mountains are undoubtedly ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers.  As if you have not already got enough value for your money, it is possible to ski two countries in one day, as the ski lifts link with Cervinia in Italy.

Zermatt has two snowboard parks with half pipes and the fun does not stop when winter ends as it also offers glacier skiing in summer.

Heli-skiing is still available in Switzerland (and Italy) so you don’t have to travel across to North America to be sure of making fresh tracks.

Cross-country, snow shoeing and tobogganing are all popular activities, plus they hold a big Telemark Festival at the end of March.

Zermatt has been the first European ski resort to offer ‘slow slopes’ for those who prefer a more leisurely, safer, ski experience.  The resort has (for the 2009/2010 season) opened four slopes for slow skiing.  The wanna-be ski racers can ski elsewhere and leave slower skiers to pootle along at their own pace and stop and admire the scenery with less risk of sustaining injury.

The après ski scene in Zermatt will not disappoint with its dozens of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. It also offers ice-skating, bowling, sleigh rides, indoor swimming pools, a cinema, museum – and great shopping!
