British ColumbiaBritish Columbia, in western Canada, offers some of the most spectacular skiing to be found anywhere in the world. The many high altitude resorts offer almost guaranteed great snowfall and enough fresh powder to bury powder hounds. In some areas they receive 40+ metres of snow (that’s 12’+!) How does that sound? Few things in life are better than getting out in the pristine clean mountain air. Add to the mix BC’s spectacular scenery, wilderness areas and wildlife and you will be in winter heaven. Whistler Vancouver was chosen as host city for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, with Whistler/Blackcomb the official skiing venue. Two hours north of Vancouver, Whistler/Blackcomb is rated as No.1 for skiing in North America. Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are located next to each other and offer close to 8000 acres of vertical fun! They are also connected via the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. Whistler is famous for its wide-open bowls, and Blackcomb for great summer glacier skiing. The areas have just about everything any level of skier or boarder could hope for: heli-skiing, glacier skiing, cat-skiing, helicopter skiing, cross-country, and much more. They also offer fantastic nightlife and a lively après ski scene. There are six regions of British Columbia, all of which all offer fantastic skiing and boarding opportunities, they include: Vancouver Island - This is one of those places in the world where you can ski in the morning and catch a round of golf or go sailing in the afternoon! The resorts are at Mt. Washington and Mt. Cain. Vancouver’s north shore also offers skiing at Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain and Mt. Seymour. The Thompson Okanagan region in central BC offers world-class skiing and boarding, as well as cross-country and helicopter skiing. Resorts include: Apex Mountain, Crystal Mountain, and Silver Star. The Kootenay Rockies offer skiing at Fernie, Kicking Horse, Fairmont Hot Springs, and many others. They are also popular for snowcat, helicopter, and backcountry skiing. The Cariboo region and Northern BC offers lesser-known but nonetheless great resorts to explore. For a change of pace from the wide array of mountain activities on offer you can always go dog sledding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice skating - or snuggle up on a sleigh ride. |
