Whistler BlackcombWhistler Blackcomb is a top-ranking resort and ‘must-ski’ destination for winter sports enthusiasts, attracting visitors from all corners of the globe. Nestled in the Coastal Mountains of western British Columbia, the mountain resorts of Whistler and Blackcomb are joined by the ‘Peak to Peak’ gondola and a pedestrian village. The area boasts an enviable average snowfall of more than 10m (33’). Having been chosen as the skiing venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, Whistler Blackcomb will, no doubt, be even more popular - so be sure to book early! Want groomed runs? Easy bunny runs? Powder? Terrain Parks? Bumps? Tree skiing? Glacier skiing? Heli-skiing/boarding? Backcountry? Wide-open bowls? Look no further – between the two mountains they have it all – and some! Combined, the two mountains offer more than 200 runs,12 bowls, 8,000 acres of skiable terrain, 17 mountain restaurants, 38 lifts (including high speed gondolas and high speed quads). The longest run is a dreamy, wax-whittling, 11 km (that’s 7 miles!). The ski season is long, normally continuing through to June, after which Blackcomb Mountain continues open for summer glacier skiing. The resort is situated 115 km (70 miles) north of Vancouver airport. Accommodation includes everything from B&Bs to condos to 5-star luxury. The apres ski scene is lively, with plenty of variety. For non-skiers there is plenty to do, with great shopping and a variety of art galleries and eateries. The village is not the highest, at 675 m, but with mountain top elevations at 2,182m (7,160’) (Whistler), and 2,284m (Blackcomb) you will have a good excuse if accused of having your head in the clouds (if there are any). |
